Groundwork

Your days, your practice, your plan — carried in your pocket, and kept entirely on your own phone.

What it is

The work happens between sessions.

Ninety minutes a week is the spark. Your life between meetings is where recovery is actually built — a Tuesday night in a parking lot, 4 a.m., the ten minutes after a phone call goes badly. Groundwork is for those hours.

It holds the practice your group sent you home with, the cards you were told to carry, your plan for a hard day, and a count of the days you have already done. Nothing in it replaces your group, your counselor, or your workbook. It just means none of it is sitting in a drawer on the night you need it.

The part that matters most

Everything stays on your phone.

  • Nothing you write is sent anywhere. Not to us, not to a server, not to the internet. It is saved on your own device and nowhere else.
  • No account, no email, no password. There is nothing to sign up for, so there is no list you end up on.
  • Your counselor cannot see it. Nobody here can. If you want us to read something, you show it to us — there is a button that copies everything so you can bring it in.
  • It works without signal. The breathing, the grounding, the urge timer, your cards and your plan all work with no bars and no data.

The trade-off, said plainly: because nothing is stored anywhere but your phone, nothing is backed up. If you clear your browser data, switch phones, or lose the device, what you wrote is gone. Use the copy button in Settings to keep anything that matters.

What is inside

Seven things, and nothing to learn.

Your days

A count that starts when you say it does, with milestones from 24 hours out to ten years.

An affirmation you wrote

Built with you, in your own words, and kept small enough to actually be true.

This week's practice

What your group sent you home with, on the screen all week, with somewhere to write what you noticed.

Your cards

The things you were told to carry — your anchor plan, your reasons, your people — two taps from any screen.

Your plan

A message from your steady self to your future self, built mostly by tapping. Copy it to give to someone you trust.

Tools for right now

The grounding toolkit from your workbook, in order: body first, then people, then the thinking mind.

Starting over does not erase anything. If you have a return to use, Groundwork keeps the stretch you already did — it still happened, and it is proof you can do it again.

Two minutes, once

Put it on your home screen.

Groundwork opens in your browser, but you can add it to your phone so it has its own icon and opens full-screen — like any other app, without the app store.

iPhone or iPad Safari

  1. Open Groundwork in Safari (not Chrome).
  2. Tap the Share button — the square with an arrow pointing up.
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. Tap Add in the top right.

Nobody looking at your phone can tell what it is from the name.

Android Chrome

  1. Open Groundwork in Chrome.
  2. Tap the three dots in the top right.
  3. Tap Add to Home screen or Install app.
  4. Tap Add or Install to confirm.

The icon appears with your other apps and opens straight in.

For counselors and referring providers

What to tell a client about it.

  • It is not a monitoring tool. You cannot see a client's entries. There is no dashboard, no alerts, no reporting. If a client wants you to read something, they bring it.
  • It holds no protected health information for us. Everything lives in the client's own browser on their own device. The center never receives it, stores it, or has access to it.
  • It is not a communication channel. There is no messaging and nobody is watching it. The app says so, in those words, on the crisis screen.
  • Hand out the link that matches their group. Adult and teen tracks run Finding Ground straight into Steady Ground, so stepping down from IOP needs no switch — the app just continues. There is also an option for clients who have finished, or who are seen one to one.
  • Use it as homework. "Bring what you wrote on the parking-lot practice Thursday" works well, and the copy button makes it easy for them.
  • Warn them about the trade-off. Clearing browser data or losing the phone erases everything. That is the price of it being genuinely private.

If you are in crisis right now

Groundwork is not an emergency service and nobody here is watching it. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Otherwise these people are awake and their whole job is this:

Ready when you are.

No account. No sign-up. Nothing leaves your phone.

Groundwork is provided free by Olympic Personal Growth Center as a self-help tool for people in recovery. It is not treatment, not medical advice, and not a substitute for care from a qualified professional. It does not diagnose anything, monitor anything, or transmit anything. If you are a current client, talk to your counselor about how to use it alongside your treatment plan.
